x-posted from the LJ...
When I was in Jonesboro this week, I went to Indian Mall. The mall has been around for, at least, my lifetime... and up until last year, would have been bustling with holiday shoppers at this time of the year.
Now, there are only 4 stores open there -- and one of them is going out of business.
Here's what happened... a new mall was built earlier this year. It's bigger and newer, with big anchors (Target, BBB, B&N, Circuit City) and less than a mile from Indian Mall. As a result, all of the stores that were inhabiting Indian Mall have closed up shop... save for Dillard's (now a clearance outlet; it's truly bargain basement), K-B Toys (which is having a going out of business sale), GameStop (not sure why they're still open), and Sears. Sears is actually doing OK business -- but they're all that's left. I'm guessing they just don't have anywhere to go right now (although, conceivably, I could see them taking over the J'boro K-Mart less than a block away and converting that into a Sears Grand or such).
The mall is very creepy... and by this time next year, I predict it won't be around at all anymore. It's already listed on deadmalls.com; I predict it'll be truly dead after Christmas... and demolished (except maybe the Sears side -- MAYBE) by next Christmas.
